San Juan Excursions runs whale watching trips and wildlife cruises out of Friday Harbor, WA, departing near the ferry landing on San Juan Island. It dates itself to the early 1990s and is owned and operated by a captain who goes by Captain Pete.
Trips sail aboard the Odyssey, a motor yacht built in 1941 as a US Navy air and sea rescue boat and converted for charter use in the mid 1980s. It takes up to 80 passengers on private charters and has heated indoor cabins, restrooms, a snack bar and open viewing decks. Captains hold United States Coast Guard certification, and two certified marine naturalists sail on each scheduled cruise.
Scheduled cruises last about three to three and a half hours, with the main orca season from May through September. Charter work covers weddings, school field trips and company outings.
