Retail & E-commerce

The price on the tag is rarely the whole cost. Restocking fees, delivery and haul-away, and the extended warranty offered at the till all sit on top, and the return window is what decides whether a mistake is recoverable. That window is commonly 30 days, but 14 is not unusual on electronics and some categories are final sale, so it is worth reading before you buy rather than after.

Why we publish no price range here

This section lists shops rather than a single trade, and the businesses in it sell everything from bicycles to furniture to fine leather. There is no figure that spans them and means anything. What is worth knowing before you buy from any of them is the same in every case: what the return policy actually is, what a warranty covers as against a service contract, and whether the seller is authorized for the brand. Those decide whether a purchase is recoverable, and none of them appear on the price tag.

Warranty and service contract are not the same thing

A warranty comes with the product and is included in what you already paid. A service contract, usually sold as an extended warranty, is a separate product you buy. The FTC puts it plainly: it costs extra and might cover different issues than the manufacturer warranty.

That second half is the one people miss. Longer is not the same as broader. A service contract can run three years and still exclude the failure you were worried about.

Before agreeing to one at a counter, the FTC suggests looking at four things: the initial cost plus hidden costs like deductibles or fees you pay each time the product is serviced, the reputation of the company actually responsible for the coverage, what limitations apply, and how a claim works including who does the repairs and whether you have to bring the item back to the store.

Its warning on telemarketed contracts is blunter. The company responsible might not be in business by the time you need it.

The return policy is the real price

Return windows are set by the shop, not by law, and they vary more than people expect. Thirty days is common, fourteen is not unusual on electronics, and some categories are final sale.

Restocking fees are the other half. A percentage taken off your refund for the privilege of changing your mind, most often on large items, opened electronics and special orders. Ask before you buy, not after.

Two details worth pinning down on anything bulky. Whether delivery is refunded if you return the item, and whether haul-away of the old one was a separate charge.

Authorized dealer, gray market and refurbished

The same model number can arrive by very different routes. An authorized dealer sells stock the manufacturer supplied, and the manufacturer warranty applies normally.

Gray market goods are genuine but imported outside the manufacturer distribution, and the manufacturer often will not honor a warranty on them. The price is lower for that reason.

Refurbished can mean returned and inspected, or repaired after a fault. Manufacturer refurbished usually carries a warranty. Seller refurbished depends entirely on the seller.

None of these is a bad buy. They are different buys at different prices, and the difference should be visible before you pay rather than discovered when something fails.

What to ask before you pay

  • How long is the return window, and does it start at purchase or at delivery?
  • Is there a restocking fee, and how much?
  • If I return it, is the delivery charge refunded?
  • Are you an authorized dealer for this brand?
  • Is this new, refurbished, or open box, and who refurbished it?
  • What does the manufacturer warranty cover, and for how long?
  • On a service contract: who is responsible for the coverage, what is the deductible per service visit, and what is excluded?
  • Do you price match, and for how long after purchase?

The last one is worth asking even when it is not advertised. A shop that will not match a price today will sometimes match it for a week afterwards.

Common questions

How much does an ecommerce website cost to build?

$5,000 to $50,000 covers three quarters of agency work, on an eight to twenty-eight week timeline. A basic storefront starts around $1,000 to $3,000. Shopify and WooCommerce builds cluster at $3,000 to $40,000; fully custom work runs $20,000 to $200,000 and up.

What makes one ecommerce quote so much higher than another?

Custom back-end development, cited by 70 percent of agencies as the main driver, then interface design at 60 percent, third-party integrations at 56 percent, AI and automation features at 51 percent, and client revisions at 49 percent. Two quotes on different platforms are not comparable at all.

What is left out of a website quote?

Third-party integrations including payment gateways and inventory systems, content migration and data cleanup, security and compliance work such as PCI-DSS and GDPR, and hosting and post-launch maintenance. Budget 15 to 20 percent of the build cost a year for that maintenance.

Do I need a license to run a retail or ecommerce business?

Not for the trade itself, but almost every state requires a sales tax permit before you sell, and many cities require a general business license regardless of whether you have a storefront. Selling into other states can create a filing obligation there too once you pass that state's threshold.
