Kansas registers roofing contractors, and the registrar is the Attorney General rather than a licensing board. K.S.A. 50-6,123 makes the certificate a condition of acting as a roofing contractor at all, and it runs one year, renewing by 1 July. Separately, a door-to-door sale of $25 or more carries three business days to cancel, with the notice required in 10-point boldface. Both are enforced from the same office.

K.S.A. 50-6,123 provides that no person shall engage in the business of or act in the capacity of a roofing contractor within this state without having a valid registration certificate as required by the Kansas Roofing Registration Act. The requirement took effect on 1 July 2013.
The administering office is what makes it different. Most trade credentials sit with a licensing board or a department of labor. Kansas puts roofing registration with the Attorney General, alongside consumer protection enforcement, and the same office publishes the consumer guidance on it. Certificates run for one year and renew on or before 1 July each year, so a certificate shown to you in June may be days from expiring.
What registration is not, is a competency credential. The Attorney General's own consumer material does not claim that registration vets skill, and this page does not claim it either. It is a register, a renewal date and an enforcement hook.
K.S.A. 50-640, part of the Kansas Consumer Protection Act, gives a consumer the right to cancel a door-to-door sale of consumer property or services priced at twenty-five dollars or more, until midnight of the third business day after the day on which the consumer signs an agreement or offer to purchase. The supplier must give a written notice of cancellation in ten-point boldface type, and the statute prescribes the wording.
The trigger is how the sale was made, not what was sold. A roofing contract signed at your kitchen table after someone knocked is inside it. The same contract signed at the contractor's office is not.

On a roof, ask for the registration certificate and look at the expiry date rather than only the number. Renewal falls on 1 July every year, which makes late spring the moment a lapsed certificate is most likely to be in circulation.
Check the registration against the Attorney General's office rather than treating a photograph of a certificate as proof. The register is the record; the paper is a copy of it.
If the contract was signed at your home after a call or a knock, count the three business days from signing and use them. The written cancellation notice should have arrived with the contract, in ten-point boldface.
Outside roofing, ask which city or county issues the permit for your work and who will pull it. That is where the credential question gets answered for most trades here.
