Efficiency rating, compressor type, and whether your existing ductwork can be reused move the number further than the brand on the box does. We publish ranges rather than single prices because a range is what a provider will actually give you: the same job moves with what is being worked on, the materials, how hard it is to get at and how busy the trade is locally. Treat these as the order of magnitude to expect before you call, not as a quote.
The figures here are national. Where a source publishes figures state by state, the state pages carry that local figure instead of this one. We do not scale a national number by a multiplier of our own invention.

Those spreads are wide because they cover a basic single stage unit dropped into good existing ductwork at one end, and a variable speed high efficiency system with duct and electrical work at the other.
Efficiency rating. SEER2 on cooling, AFUE on heating. A higher rating costs more up front and less every month after. Whether that trade pays back depends on how long you keep the house and how hard the system works where you live.
Ductwork. The quiet budget killer. If the existing runs are sound, the new equipment connects to them. If they leak, are the wrong size for the new system, or were never balanced properly, the quote climbs and the good contractors will tell you so before they start.
Sizing. An oversized system short cycles, and short cycling means it never runs long enough to pull humidity out of the air. You get a house that is cold and clammy, and a compressor that wears out early.
Access. An attic air handler in July costs more to swap than a garage unit at chest height. Same equipment, different day.
A contractor who quotes a system size from the square footage of your house, or from whatever was there before, is guessing. Whatever was there before may well have been wrong.
A proper load calculation measures the house: window area and orientation, insulation, ceiling heights, air leakage, which rooms face the afternoon sun. It takes an hour or two and it produces a number in tons or BTUs that the contractor can show you. Ask to see it. A quote that arrives without anyone having measured anything is a quote for equipment, not for a working system.
The other thing worth watching is how the visit goes. Someone who looks at your ductwork, your electrical panel and your existing venting is pricing the job. Someone who looks only at the outdoor unit is pricing a box.
There is no clean rule, but there are two useful signals. Age against expected life: most systems are considered near the end somewhere past the fifteen year mark, and a large repair on a system that old is money spent on a machine you will replace anyway. And repeat failures: one part is a repair, three parts in two years is a system telling you something.
If a contractor pushes straight to replacement on a system under ten years old without diagnosing the fault, get a second opinion. If a contractor keeps repairing a twenty year old unit without ever mentioning replacement, get one too.
HVAC is a licensed trade in most states, but the body that licenses them, the classifications, and what falls outside a license all change at the state line. Some states license the contractor, some license the individual technician, some do both. The state pages carry the detail for each one.

Equipment is only part of the price. The efficiency rating, whether the burner or compressor is staged, how hard the equipment is to reach, how much of the old system comes out, and how much venting or duct work the install needs all move it.
